Individuals with poor boundaries often fall into two categories:
Those who take excessive responsibility for others' emotions and actions.
Those who expect others to take responsibility for their own emotions and actions.
Interestingly, these types often find themselves in relationships together.
Healthy boundaries play a pivotal role in defining your identity and preserving your individuality. They delineate what you're willing to take responsibility for and what you aren't—an essential aspect of self-care.
Without boundaries, we experience feelings of depletion, being taken advantage of, intrusion, and underappreciation. Whether in work, family, or relationships, poor boundaries breed resentment, hurt, anger, and ultimately, burnout.
But how do you establish boundaries?
Begin with self-reflection—honestly assess who you are now and what you tolerate. Acknowledging your faults, mistakes, and toxic traits is challenging yet crucial for understanding your circumstances.
Envision the person you aspire to be, your future self, and align your standards accordingly. Embrace a level of selfishness by letting go of anything that doesn't meet those standards—it's an act of self-preservation.
"I can't be selfish; it's not who I am."
Setting boundaries doesn't necessitate a personality shift or rudeness. It can be a quiet removal from certain situations. Understand that as people mature, they often recognize their wrongdoing, which might explain why some individuals may not re-engage after being cut off. Sometimes, silence speaks volumes.
Implementing boundaries will transform your life. People may perceive you differently, even comment that you've 'changed,' but that's a sign of progress.
If you're wondering why certain situations aren't evolving, realize that without these discreet changes, your life will likely remain stagnant.
The most challenging step is taking that initial leap. Once you sense the newfound control, it becomes addictive and, more importantly, imperative for personal growth.
